40% more fuel efficient in the city. [1]
(Yeah, it's still a HEMI®.)
HEMI® Hybrid Technology
Cutting Edge Standard
Finally, a full-size SUV loaded with fuel-saving[1] hybrid technology and all the power and performance you expect from Dodge. Setting the standard in versatility, utility, and fuel economy [1], the 2009 Dodge Durango HEMI® Hybrid changes everything, while compromising nothing.
Want to be the first to launch your boat on Saturday morning? Done. Durango HEMI® Hybrid, with its burly 5.7-liter HEMI® tows 6,000 lbs. without breaking a sweat. Want to enjoy a nearly 40-percent fuel reduction[1] while running errands in the city? Done. THis patented system dramatically improves fuel economy [1] around town and on the highway.
The 2009 Durango HEMI® Hybrid integrates an automatic transmission with a hybrid-electric drive system. In the first mode, the engine is shut off, while one of the two electric motors provides the acceleration without using a drop of fuel. In the second mode, the electric motors "tag team" with teh HEMI® V8 for highway speeds, passing, pulling a trailer, and steep grades. This synchronous action delivers fuel-efficient [1] performance while shifts between the two modes are seamless.
Thanks to the Multi-Displacement System (MDS), the Durango HEMI® Hybrid leapfrogs traditional hybrids. MDS transforms the powerful 5.7-liter V8 into a gas-sipping 4-cylinder by deactivating half of the cylinders during cruising and light acceleration. The payoff is an increased overall fuel economy [1] of up to 25-percent.
Other Great HEMI Features
Traction Power Inverter Module
This is the "brain" of the hybrid system. It converts DC power from the 300-volt battery pack to AC power for the electric motors. It also optimizes overall fuel efficiency and performance.
Hybrid Transmission
Includes shafts, clutches, hydraulic controls, parking mechanism, and four fixed gear ratios. It also provides seamless transitions between modes. THis is the "heart" of the system.
12-Volt Battery
Just like a traditional SUV, the Durango HEMI Hybrid has a 12-volt battery. And yes, you can jump it to or form another 12-volt battery using the post extensions located in the engine compartment.
Battery Pack
A 300-volt, nickel metal hydride battery cell, this is where the energy is stored in the DC form.
Regenerative Braking
Rechargeable Batteries
- No Plugs.
Hybrid technology is all about saving energy. Case in point, Durango HEMI Hybrid's regenerative braking uses the energy that would normally be lost during braking and harnesses it for re-use - keeping the battery pack charged and ready to go. Electric motors use the captured energy to accelerate the vehicle during stop-and-go traffic and to assist the gas engine when necessary for top fuel-efficiency [1].
Interior Engineering
Engineered for Comfort and control.
Durango HEMI Hybrid's interior delivers everything you want and then some. The system's 300-volt battery pack fits into the vehicle without taking up any passenger space, so eight people can experience this highly capable, fully hybrid SUV.
Keeping an eye on the HEMI Hybrid's functions is second nature thanks to the easily readable gauge cluster. It tells you which mode the system is using so you can monitor and maintain optimal fuel efficiency [1].
Technology is the heart of Durango HEMI Hybrid. Your music is the soul. THe standard MyGIG Infotainment System [2] stands ready to deliver your choice of factory-installed SIRIUS Satellite Radio, external MP3 jack and AM/FM stereo with CD changer.
Durango Fully Loaded

A host of safety and security features help protect you mile after mile. The standard Electronic Stability Program [5] (ESP) is designed to assist drivers in maintaining control of their vehicles during extreme maneuvers. Four-wheel antilock disc brakes are standard, so is All-Speed Traction Control and the tire-pressure monitoring system. Using far less fuel, Durango HEMI Hybrid delivers so much more.
